The Portable Solution
Handheld vacuum cleaners offer a portable solution to your cleaning needs. Their lightweight, typically cordless design make them indispensable for home with small children, pets or those who "live" in their vehicles. They are also perfect for excursions such as camping trips or other mobile vacations.
They are best suited for reaching into small crevices that escape traditional upright models, such as between car seats, couch cushions, and between cabinets. They don't have the "oomph" of regular vacuums, but work well for small tasks including siphoning up cat litter, cookie crumbs and other crumby messes.
They are particularly well-suited to skimming the dust off blinds and draperies as their lower-level suction is less likely to damage delicate fabrics or suck them between a roller, which can cause damage to upright models and rollers.
Most models are cordless to maximize portability but a few models do still retain cords. Handheld vacuums exist in two varieties: they either use direct suction to remove messes or rely on a rotating brush to finish the job. The cordless varieties operate on rechargeable batteries that keep them ready at a moment's notice. The charge will usually hold for up to 20 minutes, which should be ample time to remove small messes. Larger tasks are better suited to corded varieties or traditional canister or upright vacuum cleaner models.
Both types of handheld vacuum cleaner
offer comparable
cleaning
solutions for about the same price. While they aren't
ideal as your only home cleaning solution, they are a great supplement
to a traditional upright or canister vacuum.
